He cannot engage in long-range astral projection on the earthly plane. Part of his spine is shattered, physically confining him to a wheelchair.
History:
Charles Xavier was the son of nuclear researcher Brian Xavier and his wife, Sharon Xavier. After his father died in a laboratory accident, Sharon married Brian's colleague, Kurt Marko. Kurt's son by a previous marriage Cain Marko also came to live at the Xavier’s Westchester mansion. Cain was cruel and spiteful boy who delighted in bulling his new stepbrother Charles. His father would sternly beat him for these acts which only furthered Cain’s anger. Young Charles actually felt Cain’s pain from these beatings firsthand because of the emergence of his mutant telepathic powers. A few years later Charles’s mother died of illness. Short time after that a fire in the family home took Kurt’s life, leaving the stepbrothers alone. Fortunately for Charles he managed to graduate high school by age sixteen and entered Bard College in New York. There he would earn his bachelor's degree in biology within two years. He was then accepted into the graduate studies program at England's Oxford University, where he would earn degrees in genetics and biophysics.
After graduating Xavier enlisted in the United States military, where he would become a legend in the field of search and rescue missions. This was aided greatly by the use of his psychic powers. In the army he was attached to the same unit as his stepbrother Cain. Charles was present when Cain deserted under fire during a mission. Following him in the hope of convincing him to return to their unit, Charles followed Cain and witnessed his discovery of the mystical Ruby of Cyttorak and his strange transformation that resulted in the collapse of the cave the Ruby was found in. Charles escaped the cave-in believing his stepbrother was dead within.
Later, Charles left the army and traveled the world. In Egypt he came across a mutant who used his powers for dark and criminal purposes. Xavier confronted and beat this other mutant. The conflict led to Charles' decision to devote his life to protecting humanity from evil mutants and saving innocent mutants from human oppression.
Charles next traveled to Israel, where he befriended a man named Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, a fellow mutant who posed a mastery of magnetism. Charles optimistically believed that humans and mutants could coexist, the Jewish Magnus foresaw mutants as the new minority to be persecuted and hunted because of their differences and must therefore protect themselves by dominating over humanity. This difference in views on the world drove the two friends apart and the eventually set out on their different paths to bring their dreams to reality.
When he was returning to the United States, Charles encountered the alien scout Lucifer in the Himalayas. In anger of the interference in his planned invasion of Earth, Lucifer dropped a massive stone block on Charles, crippling him. After recovering in a hospital in India the now wheel chair bound Charles resumed graduate work at Columbia University in New York receiving a pH in anthropology. He then spent several years in London earning a Ph.D. in psychiatry.
Charles returned to America and resumed his studies of mutation. During this time, Professor John Grey, a friend of Charles' from Bard College, brought his young daughter Jean to Charles for help. Jean had been traumatized when she telepathically experienced the death of a friend. Charles aided in her recovery, and in the ensuing years trained her to use her mental powers.
Inspired by his work with Jean Charles created a plan to locate young mutants and enroll them in a school using his ancestral mansion home as a base to train them to use their powers for humanity's benefit. After a few years of planing and refitting the Xavier Mansion to act as a school Xavier created the mutant locating computer Cerbro. Over the following months, Charles used Cerebro to assemble his first group of students. Scott Summers, Bobby Drake, Warren Worthington III, Henry McCoy and Jean Grey. He dubbed his students the "X-Men," because of the "extra" ability they possessed that normal humans lacked.
